Lee's Fight to Raise Funds

SBS Contracts Manager, Lee Rodgers recently took part in a fund-raising boxing match to raise funds for a children's cancer charity.

The bout took place at the start of November. Lee's chosen charity was Hallam FM's Cash for Kids. He set up a fund-raising page on the Cash for Kids website, and ultimately secured over £3,200 in donations. Anyone wishing to contribute further can visit the page here.

Speaking before the fight, Lee said: "I’m raising money to support Hallam FM's Cash for Kids in South Yorkshire so they can make a real difference to the lives of local children and young people. I specifically want to help children with cancer. My wife Joanne has recently been through a cancer scare, which led to major surgery, and I just wanted to do something positive.

"I go to a boxercise gym and whilst my wife was going through her ordeal, this was the one place that took my mind off it for a while. The gym's owner, former European boxing champion Ross Burkinshaw, has been doing white collar boxing events in conjunction with Cash for Kids for the last three or four years, and has raised about £16,000 for local children. I have decided to do the next one in November and have asked specifically for any money I raise to go to help children with cancer."

Donations from SBS, colleagues and supply chain partners all helped Lee to exceed his original target of £1,000 but further donations would of course be welcome.

The bout took place as planned, and though Lee didn't win, he felt the event had been thoroghly worthwhile. Speaking afterwards, he said:

"I wouldn’t have changed anything as it was one of the best nights of my life, with an electric atmosphere. The event was packed and I had all my family and friends there which made it even better. To top it off, Joanne and my mum and dad were asked into the ring at the end. It was amazing and something that 6 months ago I didn’t think Joanne would be around to see.

"The upshot is that I ended up raising £3280.62 for the charity. I am overwhelmed by this and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Without you and everyone else it wouldn’t have been possible."
