Promoting Staff Training

As an Investor in People, SBS devotes considerable efforts to promoting skills development within its workforce. Currently, for example, in addition to the various apprenticeships and placements we're supporting on sites across the country, we are helping four members of head office staff to secure new qualifications.

Jen Monks - a familiar face to anyone who regularly visits our Skelmersdale HQ - is now studying for a BTEC Level 3 in Business Administration. In the accounts department, Vicky McDonald and Laura Johnson are working a day a week at Wigan & Leigh College studying for Level 3 AAT qualifications in Accountancy.

Another skills-focused staff member is Abbey Henderson, who originally joined SBS as a trainee, providing administrative support to our site teams. Now, she is attending Liverpool John Moores University on a day-release basis, studying to become a quantity surveyor.  SBS is paying for the course and providing on-the-job mentoring in the shape of Ian Jones, leader of our QS team.

"We have a strong culture of encouraging studies and the pursuit of formal qualifications," explains Group Commercial Director, Gary Lawson. "Steady progression is  obviously good for the individual but it also helps to build stronger, higher-performing teams, so it's beneficial to the business, too. We're certainly very pleased to see a number of our head office staff developing their skills and getting formally recognised qualifications."
