Client: Carillion on behalf of Melville Housing Association
Approx. Value: £1.1 million

Introduction:

Carillion Energy Services was appointed by Melville Housing Association to manage a major refurbishment project involving residential properties in Dalkeith near Edinburgh. One part of the programme entailed the installation of external wall insulation to 135 two-storey houses and small, low-rise flats in an effort to improve their energy efficiency and improve living conditions for residents.

Carillion sought competitive tenders for the project and on the strength of its bid, Sustainable Building Services was appointed to undertake the external wall insulation work. The chosen system was supplied by Permarock and comprised 110mm of mineral fibre boards covered with a dash finish.

The Project:

In addition to the insulation work, SBS was also commissioned to manage scaffolding access and a number of re-roofing projects on properties that did not meet the required standard.

In order to ensure the necessary speed of progress, the company maintained close liaison with both the client and residents in order to avoid all possible delays. It also planned the delivery of materials and labour supply as efficiently as possible and maintained rigorous on-site controls to ensure that the schedules were met.

Results:

Despite a harsh winter, the work was completed on time to the satisfaction of the client, of the housing association and of the local community.  The insulation dramatically improved the thermal properties of the buildings whilst the decorative render has enhanced the appearance of the properties as a whole.

The work is expected to enable residents to make appreciable cost savings on their energy bills – valued at several hundred pounds a year – and will help to ensure that their homes are more comfortable throughout the year.
