In 2013, Sustainable Building Services (UK) Ltd was awarded a place on the Wrexham Re-roofing and Group Repairs Framework, which would run for a four year period. The award followed numerous other projects which the SBS management team had undertaken on behalf of Wrexham County Borough Council over the preceding 10 years.
For SBS, the first scheme arising the framework entailed re-roofing and associated works to 216 properties in Caia Park, Wrexham. It was valued at £750,000 and proved to be the first of many works, which continue to the present day.
The first scheme comprised structural repairs to chimney stacks, new lead-work and the installation of new pots and flaunching. It also included the replacement of rafters and roof felt, fitting new slate tiles, environmental works, pointing, fitting new uPVC soffits and fascias, the renewal of rainwater goods and external painting works. Some properties also required the removal and reinstatement of solar PV panel systems.
On the strength of its performance, SBS secured a second phase of works, running from March to November 2015. Initially, this was for only 25 properties but the scheme was ultimately extended to cover 60 properties by the end of the contract.
SBS used the schemes to deliver added social value by sponsoring a series of free school and community workshops focusing on food education. Wrexham's employability & community benefit officer Amanda Evans said: "We are so pleased that Sustainable Building Services proposed and sponsored these workshops. They were fun, educational and inspiring, and to see the children taking such a keen and active interest in matters of health, nutrition and fitness was absolutely fantastic."
The success of the first phases helped consolidate the relationship between SBS and Wrexham CBC. In the months that followed, the council made several other awards and, ultimately, SBS was appointed to deliver all of the following schemes:
The re-roofing and repairs schemes all entailed working with occupied properties so, to prevent delays and minimise disruption, SBS maintained excellent resident communications throughout. In the event, it delivered all work on or ahead of schedule and customer satisfaction scores were better than 92%. This exceeded the performance of all other framework contractors.
Writing on behalf of Wrexham Council, project surveyor Tom Williams said of the initial scheme: "SBS have extensive experience of delivering Group Repair and Re-roofing projects for Wrexham CBC and this project is a further example. They continue to provide the highest standards of service and achieve excellent KPI data."
Speaking during the re-roofing works in May 2015, project surveyor Geraint Williams noted that SBS had "consistently achieved KPI scores in excess of 90%. Sustainable Building Services continues to deliver a high quality of service on all projects for Wrexham CBC, in often difficult geographical locations."
