MP Inspects Green Homes Grant LAD Schemes

In late December 2021, Lee Rowley MP, representative of North East Derbyshire, visited a series of homes recently improved by SBS under the Green Homes Grant Local Authority Delivery (LAD) scheme.

Mr Rowley was accompanied on his tour by Niall Clark, Director of Property Services and Development (Rykneld Homes), Helen Brown Head of Development and Regeneration (Rykneld Homes) and Councillor Jeremy Kenyon - North East Derbyshire District Council Member with responsibility for Climate Change.

Multi-measure Retrofit for Reading B.C.

In December 2021, SBS began the 2nd phase of an energy efficiency retrofit project (Norcot Estate) in Reading, following on from the successful delivery of Phase 1. The work is scheduled to run into the summer of 2022 and will entail improvements to 31 properties – a mix of semi-detached, mid- and end-terrace properties, with a value of approx. £1.6m - £1.8m.

The scheme has been commissioned and funded by Reading Borough Council, and is being delivered in accordance with the requirements of PAS2030:2019 / PAS 2035:2019.

Repairs and Energy Efficiency Scheme, Denbighshire

In November 2021, Denbighshire County Council wrote to SBS to confirm the award of Lot 1 of its Council Housing Major External Repairs scheme for 2021/22.  The works will comprise repairs and energy efficiency improvements to a total of 50 occupied council dwellings in Rhyl, North Wales.

Works will typically entail the installation of replacement roof coverings, rainwater goods, facias and soffits, together with external re-rendering, re-decoration and the re-pointing of brickwork.

Project Complete - Citizen Housing - Energy Efficiency Scheme

SBS has successfully completed an 18-month energy efficiency scheme for Citizen Housing in Coventry.

Worth almost £1.2 million, the scheme entailed installing external wall insulation and render to 118 solid-walled properties. Adaptations included the replacement or extension of soffits, facias and guttering, together with the installation of Switchee smart thermostats.

Eight of the properties were flats, which also benefited from roof replacements. SBS also installed new roofs over several outbuildings.

EEM Property Improvement Works Framework

In the same week that we learned of our success on the Fusion 21 Energy Efficiency Framework, we also heard that we had been awarded a place on the Efficiency East Midlands (EEM) Property Improvement Works Framework.

The framework will cover major and minor investment and refurbishment schemes, cyclical improvement works - including works across multiple and single sites - and any additional Decent Homes programmes or new initiatives that arise.

Energy Efficiency “Must be a Higher Priority”

On 2nd March 2020, the BBC released figures that showed an alarming shortfall in the UK’s progress towards its 2050 ‘net zero’ carbon target.

The report quotes Dr Tim Forman, a researcher at the University of Cambridge's Centre for Sustainable Development, who said that meeting the 2050 target would require “a national project of a scale not seen since World War Two.”

The commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 was signed into law in June 2019 but the UK’s lack of progress has been alarming scientists and environmental commentators alike.

Work On-Track in Broxtowe

Back in August, we announced that we had begun work on an ECO3-funded energy efficiency project for Broxtowe Borough Council, procured via Efficiency East Midlands. This involves installing PermaRock external wall insulation to 61 properties.

Work is now approximately two-thirds complete and still progressing quickly. The team is on track for finishing the scheme on or ahead of schedule
