In April 2019, SBS received news that it had won a competitive bid for a new Cheltenham Borough Council contract, entitled: 'External Renovation & Improvement of Cornish Type Properties.' It won the open tender on the basis of both price and quality.
The work will be split into two phases, worth a total of £2m to £2.5m. Phase 1 is scheduled to commence in June 2019 and must be complete by November. It will entail improvements works to 36 properties, comprising four 2-storey blocks of flats (16 units in all), and 20 houses, which will be a mix of mid- and end-terraces.
Phase 2 will begin in 2020 and must again be finished before November of that year.
In all cases, the work will start with concrete repairs; the removal of all concrete infill panels forming the external skin, the repair of the concrete columns, and infilling between columns with load-bearing blockwork.
Next, SBS will undertake enabling works prior to installing external wall insulation (EWI), which will improve the thermal performance of the properties. This will take place alongside the installation of new roof coverings, together with related works on chimneys, fascias, soffits and rainwater goods. As main contractor, SBS will also manage the installation of new energy efficient doors and windows.
"We're pleased to have won another external improvement scheme," said company chair, Derek Horrocks, "and to have built links with an important local authority client. We look forward to working with Cheltenham Borough Council and to improving the quality of life of many of its tenants."
